If you are like me, you probably use Google many times a day. But, chances are, unless you are a technology geek, you probably still use Google in its simplest form. If your current use of Google is limited to typing a few words in, and changing your query until you find what you’re looking for, then I’m here to tell you that there’s a better way – and it’s not hard to learn. On the other hand, if you are a technology geek, and can use Google like the best of them already, then I suggest you bookmark this article of Google search tips. You’ll then have the tips on hand when you are ready to pull your hair out in frustration when watching a neophyte repeatedly type in basic queries in a desperate attempt to find something.

The following Google search tips are based on my own experience and things that I actually find useful. The list is by no means comprehensive. But, I assure you that by learning and using the 12 tips below, you’ll rank up there with the best of the Google experts out there. I’ve kept the descriptions of the search tips intentionally terse as you’re likely to grasp most of these simply by looking at the example from Google anyways.

Expert Google Search Tips

Explicit Phrase:
Lets say you are looking for content about internet marketing. Instead of just typing internet marketing into the Google search box, you will likely be better off searching explicitly for the phrase. To do this, simply enclose the search phrase within double quotes.

Example: “internet marketing”

Exclude Words:
Lets say you want to search for content about internet marketing, but you want to exclude any results that contain the term advertising. To do this, simply use the “-” sign in front of the word you want to exclude.

Example Search: internet marketing -advertising

Site Specific Search:
Often, you want to search a specific website for content that matches a certain phrase. Even if the site doesn’t support a built-in search feature, you can use Google to search the site for your term. Simply use the “site:somesite.com” modifier.

Example: “internet marketing” site:www.smallbusinesshub.com

Similar Words and Synonyms:
Let’s say you are want to include a word in your search, but want to include results that contain similar words or synonyms. To do this, use the “~” in front of the word.

Example: “internet marketing” ~professional

Specific Document Types:
If you’re looking to find results that are of a specific type, you can use the modifier “filetype:”. For example, you might want to find only PowerPoint presentations related to internet marketing.

Example: “internet marketing” filetype:ppt

This OR That:
By default, when you do a search, Google will include all the terms specified in the search. If you are looking for any one of one or more terms to match, then you can use the OR operator. (Note: The OR has to be capitalized).

Example: internet marketing OR advertising

Phone Listing:
Let’s say someone calls you on your mobile number and you don’t know how it is. If all you have is a phone number, you can look it up on Google using the phonebook feature.

Example: phonebook:617-555-1212 (note: the provided number does not work – you’ll have to use a real number to get any results).

Area Code Lookup:
If all you need to do is to look-up the area code for a phone number, just enter the 3-digit area code and Google will tell you where it’s from.

Example: 617

Numeric Ranges:
This is a rarely used, but highly useful tip. Let’s say you want to find results that contain any of a range of numbers. You can do this by using the X..Y modifier (in case this is hard to read, what’s between the X and Y are two periods. This type of search is useful for years (as shown below), prices or anywhere where you want to provide a series of numbers.

Example: president 1940..1950

Stock (Ticker Symbol):
Just enter a valid ticker symbol as your search term and Google will give you the current financials and a quick thumb-nail chart for the stock.

Example: GOOG

Calculator:
The next time you need to do a quick calculation, instead of bringing up the Calculator applet, you can just type your expression in to Google.

Example: 48512 * 1.02

Word Definitions:
If you need to quickly look up the definition of a word or phrase, simply use the “define:” command.

Example: define:plethora

Hope this list of Google search tips proves useful in your future Google searches. If there are any of your favorite Google expert power tips that I’ve missed, please feel free to share them in the comments. . Hope this wil be useful ..

Like many other social networks, Facebook also contains tons of fake profiles unfortunately. Those fake profile holders use Social Engineering tactics to attack innocent people. Facebook has almost 500 Million Users and it is not surprising to have few thousands fake profiles. Below I have mentioned some funny but true tips to check whether a profile is fake or not.

1. Profile Picture. Always be suspicious of profiles featuring photos of professional models. Most of the fake profiles, especially that of females, have only one profile picture and that too a beautiful or sexy (ahem) picture!

2. Many Males. Their friends list will contain males mostly (Well, that’s not their fault, gender issue ). It could be around 1000s or even more than that.

3. When Did They Joined? Check when she/he joined. If they have lots of friends and have only been on the Facebook a short amount of time, it’s likely to be a fake one.

4. Tag Me! He/she would be tagged in tons of cartoon pictures than his/her own picture.

5. Apps Requests. If he/she is in your friend list, then you will get lotta application or like requests from them. I got many requests like that, some include “Can you send me a chicken?”, “Can you send a buffalo?”.. LOL.

6. Facebook Albums. Most of the fake profiles photos are open to everyone. Well, not a promising tip, but worth it. It may contain lot of pictures but they would not have tags indicating other profiles. They may also contain really tiny photos.

7. Full Filled Profile. If a profile is lengthy and detailed, then you can be sure that it is a real person. Fake Profile creators won’t have time to create long and interesting profiles.

8. Favorite Pages. Most of the fake profiles have less than 20 pages, well almost.

9. Description. Most of the fake profiles have descriptions like “Accept My Farmville Request”, “Add Me In Mafia Wars”, and many more.

10. For Boys : Girls don’t send friend requests to strangers, I mean good girls! So if, by chance, you get a friend request from girls, don’t confirm it without verifying the details. If you are not a handsome looking guy and you got a friend request from a hot babe. Then you really need to triple check!

11. For Girls : Who said? I support boys too! But some boys usually send friend requests to girls. So it is better to confirm with others and verify. If you are not a hot babe and you got a friend request from a handsome looking guy. Then you should also really need to triple check!

12. Status Updates. Most probably fake profile’s status updates won’t get comments or likes. They may also share fake websites (Phishing attack). (Survey)

13. Celeb Request. If you are added by a celebrity! Unless you are a celebrity please don’t add! If they are claiming to be a model or actress or anything like that, then they will surely have professional pictures on their album.

14. Add Feeds. Fake profile’s feeds will contain only friend request adds.

I didn’t say don’t accept any strange friend requests. Trust, but verify!

So if you encounter any fake profiles, I mean if you really encounter, then you can report it to Facebook.

Did you encounter any fake profiles? Please share your experience, and at the same time, share and tweet!

When writing a blog post it is important to remember our readers expect to be entertained and informed. Of equal importance is the format in which the content is presented to them. An easy to read layout that doesn’t mince words is usually preferred.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when posting:

1) Get to the Point
Every post you do should have a specific reason. You’re writing to convey information or express your opinion on something. Get to it and let your readers know how you feel or what information you may have that could be of interest or benefit to them and how. We’re not writing a novel with the intent to keep readers in suspense and string them along.

2) Maintain your personality
Blogging allows you to express yourself or impart information in your own unique style of delivery. This is what makes it so entertaining to many readers and this is many times why they subscribe to your blog. Let your personality shine thru since this will be what makes you stand apart from all the other bloggers. Whether it may be sarcasm, wit, enthusiasm, or a more analytical and to the point delivery your readers have chosen your blog for its information and also the way it is presented to them. Don’t lose sight of this, continue to be you.

3) Be Consistent
This is important both in style and subject matter. You’ve picked a particular niche to speak about and have attracted avid readers due to their interest in this subject. Do veer off onto other unrelated issues or topics for any significant period of time or you will confuse and lose your readers.

Your writing style also needs to be consistent. As we spoke of earlier, readers were in part attracted to your blog for your particular and unique style of delivering your opinion and/or information. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

4) Write Attention Grabbing Headlines
Your headlines can be controversial, cynical, or humorous. Write them in such a way that your subscribers will be curious as to what you’re referring or why you may be referring to something in a certain way. Play on their emotions; shock, humor, sympathy, or even intrigue will generally catch their attention compelling them to read more.

5) Reader friendly format
When blogging present your content in an easy to read fashion. By using bullet points or numerical listings you have enabled subscribers and visitors alike to easily follow along or even refer back to particular portions of the content. This type of layout is also easier on the eyes due to the spacing involved with a listing format as opposed to words and sentences that seem to run together in a paragraph type of formatting.

6) Optimize your post with keywords
By correctly using keywords within your content you will make it easier for the search engines to find your content so it can be displayed in their search results for anyone looking for information related to what you’ve posted on.

So remember next time you’re writing a blog post be yourself and keep in mind what both your readers and the search engines would like to see. This way everyone wins!

Accessibility is a crucial factor in website designing. Investing thoughts and elements on how the website looks is all well but what is more important is how accessible the it is to visitors and prospective customers.

An ideal website design focuses on letting the visitors attain a higher level of accessibility into the website. Here are some tips that can help you create a website design that allows visitors to come through with minimal troubles:

ALT Text
Do make sure to include meaningful ALT text in your website design. Visually impaired users are able to browse through the site when their screen readers read aloud the ALT text. With the ALT text missing from your website design, your website will potentially be unusable for your blind visitors and you could end up losing out on potential customers.

Correct Spellings
Screen readers are not able to pronounce words that are misspelled. So, if the content of your website has any spelling errors the screen readers will completely ignore the word and the sentence will make no sense to the user. Visually impaired users have a sense of your web design through what the screen readers portray. And if they have a bad impression, you stand to lose business. Avoid Abbreviations As much as you can, avoid using abbreviations.

Just like screen readers don’t recognize spelling errors, the same way it fails to know abbreviated words. They try to spell it out and end up pronouncing some undecipherable word. For example you might be able to know that ‘eg’ is example but the screen reader may pronounce it as ‘egg.’ Thus, it is always better to use good website design practices to make life easier for your users.

Contrasting Colors for Text
Dark text on a light or white background is the tried and tested best for most people as it increases readability. Even if you are using other colors make sure to keep the text color in dark contrast to the background.

Readable Text
Make your text resizable so that people with poor eyesight are able to resize the content matter to suit them.

Colors and CSS
Adjust the colors of your website using web design solutions such as CSS. Thus, if by chance visitors find your default stylesheet hard to use, they can turn it off and use their own stylesheet.

Sensible Links
Make sure that all the links on your website make sense even out of context. Visually impaired people often skip through the links on a page. Links like ‘Click here’ does not make any sense to them. rather try framing ‘Click here for more information about website design.’ This would tell them what exactly are they for.

By now, many people have heard about companies that will buy your used laptop for cash. These companies buy your laptop and refurbish them to sell as used. It’s essentially laptop-recycling, and can be a great option for people who may have an extra laptop that isn’t being used or a laptop that doesn’t work (as many companies will buy it from you whether it’s working or not).

Selling your used laptop is also a great way to get some extra cash if you are trying to save up for a newer laptop. Technology is always changing, and eventually you will want to upgrade to a newer, faster computer that is more compatible with ever-changing software. Why not get rid of your old laptop while at the same time making some cash to put towards a new one?

No matter what the reason, once you decide to sell your laptop, there are a few things that you should know. There are many companies that will buy your laptop and some are better than others to do business with. The following paragraphs will help guide you through some of the important things to know when starting the process of selling your laptop.

The most important thing that you need to consider when selling your laptop is the protection of your personal information. It is vital to your security and identity that you choose a company that will remove all information from your hard drive before refurbishing it. This is especially important if your laptop isn’t working and you can’t access the information on it yourself. Make sure that the company that you sell your laptop to will erase all the information off your laptop as soon as it is received.

The next thing you’ll want to look for is a company that will get you the best used laptop value. Some companies will give you an instant quote for your laptop. If you can get an instant quote online this is the best way to find out right away of you are getting the best value for your laptop. Check this out and find out how much you may receive for selling your laptop before you send it in. And remember – you should never have to pay to ship your laptop. Sell your used laptop to a company that will pay for shipping and ensure that you pay absolutely nothing in the process.

Once you find a good value with a good company and decide to sell your laptop, another thing to look into is when you will be paid for the laptop. You should be able to find out from the company approximately how long it will take for them to receive your laptop and send you your check. It might take a couple of weeks from the time you get your estimate, but if you know when to expect it, you shouldn’t have to worry. If you want to receive your check as soon as possible, you may even be able to get your check over-nighted for a fee.

You can use the cash to save up for a new laptop, or just make some money from a laptop that isn’t used or doesn’t work. No matter what your reasons, selling your laptop can be financially beneficial, environmentally-friendly, and a smart move for people who like to upgrade.

Unless you’ve built a website just to showcase your collection of salt and pepper shakers, you probably want to attract some visitors. If your business depends on your site attracting visitors and soliciting sales, then web traffic is essential.

Simply submitting your site to search engines is not enough. You should work with your Webmaster to implement these ten tips to increase the level of traffic to your site.

1. Content, Content, Content!
First and foremost, make sure that your site is informative! Don’t just list your services, elaborate on what you do and why you do it well. The more detailed you are in your website, the better your search engine results will be.

2. Classified Ads
Take advantage of the variety of free online classified ad websites and get the word out about your new site!Be sure to always post a working link to your website. Get help from your webmaster on the proper html coding for a classified ad post if you need it.

3. Articles
One of the best steps you can take to promote your site is to write and publish articles (just like this one!). First, an informative article helps establish that you’re an expert in your particular field. Once a reader finishes the article, they may be inclined to follow a link to your website to learn more about you and your business.

More importantly, once you’ve distributed your article to some of the many online article directories, you’ll have created additional links back to your website that search engines will see and count. More on that in a moment.

4. Local Directories
There are two basic kinds of directories that should interest you. First, there are regional directories, perhaps for your local metropolitan area, then there are industry-specific directories. These are similar to search engines in that they list other web sites, but they’re compiled and organized differently. Additionally, many directories allow you to create an online profile that will include information about your business, rather than just a link to your website.

Take a few minutes to do some searches for directories in your area and in your industry, and submit your site to any you find appropriate.

5. Newsletters
Online Newsletters or eZine’s are a great way to keep your existing and potential clients aware of news or changes within your business. If your business model can support a regular newsletter, you should encourage visitors to your website to sign up for it. You might offer them a free copy of one of the great articles you’ve already written, as a reward for signing up.

When you’re writing for your newsletter, make sure that each of your topics has a Title, a Teaser, then a link back to your website to read the rest of the topic. If your topics are interesting and timely, then you’ll ensure repeat visits to your site.

6. Forums and Newsgroups
Another way to attract new visitors is to participate in online forums and discussions. Be sure to take the time to understand what the forum or newsgroup is about, and be respectful of other members. Simply posting ads or links to your website will likely just get you banned. Instead, post comments or questions that are on point, including a simple link to your site in your signature, and you’ll be rewarded with interested responses and visitors to your site.

7. Press Releases
Many businesses forget the power of a press release. When you have something that’s newsworthy, like the opening of your business, let the press know! They’re happy to print your release if they think it will be interest to their readers. When distributing press releases, be sure to look for online PR distributors, as well as your local news media. There are sites you can post your release for free, and other sites that will distribute your release for a nominal fee.

8. Blogs, Social Networking and Social Bookmarking
Blogs are online journals, and there are a number of websites that offer free blogging accounts. With your online journal, you can post a few tips or even full-fledged articles. If you submit new posts consistently, and the topics are interesting, you’ll start to attract a variety of visitors. There are a variety of networking sites, both social and professional, that will allow you to create an online profile for yourself and your business.

Finally, you should look in to creating accounts on several of the social bookmarking sites that have cropped up. These are sites that allow you to simply bookmark and comment on other websites.

9. Reciprocal Links
It’s very important that you find other websites that are willing to put a link on their site to yours. Some of the above methods will help accomplish this, but you should also give some thought to other site options, particularly sites that are related to your business. For instance, you might see if your Chamber of Commerce has a website, and if they do, make sure you have a link by your membership name. You might also consider other businesses that compliment yours, like how a mortgage company and a title company are complimentary. When approaching these businesses, you would offer to put a link on your site to their business, in exchange for a link on their site to your own business.

Not only will visitors to these other sites see the link to your site and follow it, but as we discussed previously, these additional links to your site will help your search engine ranking tremendously. Each link on a non-directory website is like a vote of confidence in you and your website.

10. Email and Letters
There are a variety of other ways to promote your website. For instance, every piece of communication that comes from your business should include your web address. Your email can have it in the signature, your letterhead can have it in the address area, and certainly it should be included on business cards.

Make sure that your email address is from your website and not your internet service provider. Why advertise for ABC.net when you could be advertising for YourCompany.com ?

So, I hope that you’ve gained a couple of ideas on how you can promote your website, and note that none of the above methods has to cost you any money, just a little time and effort.
